I first began listening to and getting into trance around 4 years ago, and have been djing for just over a year now. One dj who I was inspired by a lot was Paul Van Dyk. What inspired me the most about him was his mixing style, which consisted of very sharp tight and solid mixes. From this inspiration I decided to start djing and considering I had built up a large collection of records over my years of listening to trance I thought it would be a good idea!
The style of music I play can very much be described as trance although I do like to incorporate a few techno and harder edged tunes into my sets. The inspiration for the style of music I play comes from 4 main DJ's, Paul Van Dyk (again!), Armin Van Buuren, DJ Tiesto & Ferry Corsten. All these dj's have their own unique styles and its from a mixture of these styles that defines my own style of music.
The first time I actually played to a crowd of more than 2 people was at a friend's house party last summer and this was no average house party as there were over 200 people there and I will admit that I was extremely nervous doing my first mix but after than I started to relax and very much enjoyed it :-)
Since then I have managed to produce several demo CD's and become one of the resident dj's for a night called Trancendance, which now has monthly nights in Windsor and London. I also obtained the following response after sending one of my demo CD's to the Nu-Star DJ Agency.
Hi Pav,
Just listened to your CD, the mixing is excellent and the tracks go very well together. I like the way it progresses through the CD. You have what it takes to become an excellent DJ if this is a true representation on a live mix.
One criticism I have to make though is there are a lot of ‘big' tracks on there – In fact I have heard all of them before. Big tracks are great, however if a promoter receives 25 CDs per week and many have the same tracks on them it gets a bit monotonous.
It's great to see you put a track list on, this is so important, however a little decoration wouldn't go amiss on the cover; maybe name your CD series. I know it sounds a little pedantic but little things can go a long way to catch the eyes of a promoter. My other main criticism is your DJ name. It sounds to me quite like a Hardcore DJ name and in music a DJ name goes a long way. You must market yourself in a way in which people will want to buy you; kind of like you would with a product.
On the whole, keep at it as you definitely have a talent. I hope you take the criticisms in the way they are intended, as a guide to assist you progress in music.
Thanks
